About 1,000 Vermonters are currently serving in the Middle East, including about 200 members of the Air National Guard.
Gov. Phil Scott said Thursday that he wants Vermont Air National Guard members brought back from the Middle East as soon as possible, citing concern over the length of their deployment.
His comments came one day after the remains of four U.S. service members killed in the region were returned to the United States. That brought the overall U.S. military death toll there to 18, not including any Vermont service members.
Scott said state leaders are continuing to press for relief for the troops and an end to the prolonged stay overseas. He said he wants guardsmen and women to be able to come home without further delay.
