State testing confirmed that a gray fox involved in a Saturday attack in town had rabies, Marlborough police said Wednesday.
Police responded to Route 12 near Webb Depot Road shortly before 5 p.m. after reports of an animal acting aggressively in the roadway. At the scene, officers saw the fox lunge at stopped vehicles and damage tires, bumpers and other exterior parts.
Two people were bitten during the encounter, and both were identified by police as Keene residents. They were taken to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment.
Marlborough Police Chief Zach Byam confirmed the rabies result by email. Police said the incident should serve as a warning to avoid contact with wild animals, especially any that appear unusually aggressive or disoriented, and to seek medical care right away after any bite.
The fox was killed at the scene after traffic was cleared, according to police. The N.H. Department of Health and Human Services handled the testing, but officials were not available Wednesday to discuss the case.
