Two defendants accused in connection with the 2024 death of a Keene woman may not face jurors until next year, after a Wednesday court hearing that set only tentative trial dates.
Andrea Martin and Christian Torruellas appeared remotely in court Wednesday morning as lawyers and the judge worked through scheduling in the case tied to the death of 31-year-old Justine Steffy.
Investigators have said Steffy died from an overdose involving fentanyl. Prosecutors contend Martin and Torruellas are responsible for her death. Authorities also allege Steffy was drugged after being beaten, then taken from a home in Keene before her body was later discovered in bags along a roadside in Massachusetts.
Both defendants have remained in jail since their arrests last year.
During the hearing, Torruellas reacted to the possibility of a trial date that would keep the case moving slowly toward a jury. The court discussion left him and Martin facing a continued wait.
The schedule now under consideration would put Martin’s pretrial proceedings on April 30, with jury selection set for May. Torruellas’ trial would follow at the end of July.
Prosecutors told the court the case involves a large number of witnesses, which could stretch each trial to five or six days.
